APPLIED. Women + Design

Paula Modersohn-Becker is known and famous as a painter. Hardly anyone knows that around 1900 she ventured into a new artistic field: textile design. The result was an Art Nouveau tapestry titled Apple Tree. During this time, she also created the design sketch Martha and Paula Herding Sheep for her friend Martha Vogeler. Half a century later, in 1957, Martha Vogeler turned this sketch into a tapestry at her weaving workshop in the Haus im Schluh. This small work provided the impetus for an exhibition entirely dedicated to applied art by women—from 1920 to the present.
Textile art and fashion, works in porcelain and ceramics, pieces in silver and brass, commercial art, and photography: “ANGEWANDT. Woman + Design‹ presents works by 15 female artists and designers who have successfully realized their creative visions in various fields—and continue to do so—and whose work can also be viewed within the context of Worpswede.
Mexican artist Claudia A. Cruz, a member of GEDOK Bremen, enriches and reflects on the exhibition with her work Ode to the Warp Threads from 2024.
