Scenic Ride on the Historic Bispinger Heide-Express from Bispingen and Soltau to Lüneburg

Hop on board for a leisurely train ride on the vintage Heide-Express. The powerful diesel locomotive and its cars will take you past idyllic towns from Lüneburg via Amelinghausen and Steinbeck to Bispingen.

Take the Heide-Express to visit the beautiful vacation destination of Soltau as well. Of course, the Heide-Express is also available for the trip from Soltau via Bispingen to Amelinghausen and on to Lüneburg.

This year, the legendary historic train will run every Wednesday from August 12 through September 23. Please note that the trip on August 26, 2026, is unfortunately canceled due to track work.

TIP NO. 1: WATER TOWER WITH A GREAT VIEW
The best view of Lüneburg and the surrounding region can be enjoyed from the observation deck of the water tower—built in 1906 and 1907—which stands 56 meters high. It’s accessible both on foot and by elevator.

TIP NO. 2: STINT MARKET WITH THE OLD CRANE
The old crane, one of Lüneburg’s landmarks alongside City Hall, is a reminder of the time when Lüneburg’s “white gold” (salt) was loaded here and smelt (fish) was traded. Today, the “Stint” is one of the city’s most popular bar districts.

TIP NO. 3: PLATZ AM SANDE
Platz am Sande features a row of magnificent townhouses with all kinds of Lüneburg gables from a wide variety of eras and architectural styles. It is considered one of the most significant medieval squares in Germany.
