Die Landesbühne Nord präsentiert "Macbeth"
Scotland in the 11th century. Lightning flashes and thunder roars. In a forest, three witches prophesy to the heroic general Macbeth that he will one day be king of the land. To give fate a helping hand, Macbeth—spurred on by his ambitious and unscrupulous wife—decides to murder the current king. Before he can ascend the longed-for throne, however, further murders and slander are necessary. When he finally achieves his goal, he is merely a shadow of his former self and lives in constant fear that his misdeeds might come to light or that the ghosts of those he has murdered might take revenge on him.
William Shakespeare’s (1564–1616) *Macbeth*, one of the most powerful and violent plays, is read today as a profound psychological thriller: Consumed by ambition and an obsession with power, Macbeth and his wife know no moral boundaries and will literally stop at nothing—even over corpses. Yet they are unable to silence their own consciences and thus become victims of their own making.
