Tradition, honor, discipline, excellence - these are the four basic principles that have always been taught at Welton Academy. But with the arrival of the young teacher John Keating, who teaches literature, the rigid rules of the boys' boarding school are suddenly broken.
 
In his unusual lessons, he motivates the pupils to think for themselves and develop their own personalities: "You will learn to enjoy words and language. Believe it or not, words and thoughts can change the world. We don't write and read poems because they are pretty. We write and read poetry because we are human. And people are filled with passions."
 
When his pupil Neil learns about the mysterious "Dead Poets' Club", of which Keating himself was once a member, he decides to revive the secret society.
