His passion for photography began at a young age when he received his first camera as a gift. So it is no surprise that he worked as a press photographer in his later professional life.
In addition to his photographic pursuits, he is active in various artistic fields. He is interested in plants, landscapes, and minimalist structures. His structural photos relate to his synesthesia.
What is that? The term synesthesia comes from Greek and means cross-sensory perception.
There are different forms of synesthesia. It is a neurological phenomenon in which different senses merge, causing a stimulus to automatically trigger a sensation in another sensory area of the person. For example, one can hear sounds and simultaneously see colors, meaning that a tone and a noise are automatically associated with a color and shape in one's mind.
It is the same with Matthias Waldeck. It is indeed a color hearing. A portion of his photos, collages, and also his paintings consist of these structures.

His objects relate to relics and finds from the coastal regions of the Baltic Sea. They can provide insights into things related to the themes of the past or transience: an old fish trap or wreckage, forgotten things on the beach. These items tell stories or are also connected to old craft traditions. However, they can also be algae, corals, or other living beings underwater, says the artist who lives in Heiligenhafen on the Baltic coast.
Martin Lichtmann attempts to translate these stories into forms using various clay masses. He does not use glazes, as his objects are meant to convince on their own. The unique pieces are shaped from coarse chamotte clays and fired at high temperatures.
