Stade

Hanseatic city charm, half-timbered architecture and maritime flair

Stade, with its Hanseatic heritage, picturesque half-timbered houses and maritime atmosphere is a city where history comes alive. Stroll through the beautifully preserved Old Town, home to charming cafés and historical landmarks. The cobbled streets will transport you back in time to a bygone era. A stroll along the old Hanseatic harbour is always delightful – where ships once unloaded their wares, pubs and cafés with summer terraces now invite you to relax by the water. Embrace the city’s maritime heritage and perhaps enjoy a bit of shopping in the many boutiques and artisan shops. A visit to this enchanting Hanseatic city feels like stepping into another time – a journey full of discoveries, delights and unforgettable moments.

Sights

First mentioned as a Hanseatic city in 1267, Stade’s affiliation with this northern merchant league continues to imbue the city with its captivating maritime charm. The Fish Market, with its historical wooden treadwheel crane, is one of the city’s most notable sights. Located right on the quay walls and surrounded by half-timbered houses, it’s a must-see. Stade’s landmark is the Church of St Cosmae et Damiani, whose tower offers spectacular views across the town.  For water sports enthusiasts, Stade is the perfect playground, with activities like canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, BBQ donuts, and boat tours on the Fleetkahn or the Tidenkieker, the latter being a tidal wetlands tour boat. Exploring the city from the water is highly recommended.
