Tour overview
Experience nature and culture, this tour makes both possible! Because this tour not only includes the route from the Innerste jump from the Oberharz to the Leine Valley; the first World Heritage Sites on this tour have also been taken into account by choosing the starting point in Goslar.
In order to have enough time to enjoy the impressive landscape, nature and cultural experiences, this tour is divided into three stages. However, the individual stages can of course also be customized. The tour starts at Goslar station and ends at Sarstedt station.

Day 1 / Goslar - Clausthal-Zellerfeld / 21 km / 650 vertical meters
The starting point for this tour description is at the train station in Goslar, the end point at the train station in Sarstedt
.For those who do not wish to travel by public transport to Clausthal-Zellerfeld, the actual starting point of the Innerste Cycle Path, there is the option of completing the first stage in a challenging way by bike. This means that you have to climb approx. 650 meters in altitude over 21 km. A bit of a challenge for a conventional biker; a good test of battery range for a pedelec rider.
On arrival in Goslar, you should plan enough time to visit the historic town. Together with the Imperial Palace and the former Rammelsberg mine, Goslar's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Your sightseeing tour begins in the old town and leads via the Imperial Palace (built between 1040 and 1050 under Henry III) to the Rammelsberg visitor mine (closed in 1988 and on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1992)
After visiting the mine, it's time to get pedaling, as the next 13 km or so involve a climb of around 400 m to reach the highest point of the tour at the Schalker viewing tower. Your efforts will be rewarded with an impressive view of the Brocken from the tower.
After a longer descent, you will reach the Zankwieser and Kiefhölzer ponds. Both ponds are part of the Upper Harz Water Management System, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.Clausthal-Zellerfeld is reached shortly afterwards and the hotel is almost within reach. Nevertheless, a short detour to the Bockswieser Höhe is essential, as the view of the surrounding countryside, Torfhaus and the Brocken is indescribably beautiful.Day 2 / Clausthal-Zellerfeld - Grasdorf / 73 km / 350 vertical meters
The first signpost to the Innerste spring is located at the town hall in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. On the way there, you should take some time to visit the town. The market church "Zum Heiligen Geist" in particular will catch your eye.
From the town hall, the second stage takes you towards the source of the Innerste. Shortly before the source, the "Innerste profile" information board will provide you with comprehensive information about the river, its course and its significance for the region. The last 400 m to the duck swamp and the Innerste jump should be covered on foot, as there is only a narrow root path to the spring, which is barely accessible by bike.
Back on the bike, the long descent towards the mouth of the Innerste begins, which in some sections requires very good cycling technique and intact brakes.
On arrival at Bärenbrucher Teich, you will find an information board with everything you need to know about the Oberharzer Wasserregal cultural monument. Shortly afterwards, the topic is taken up again on the information board at the Prinzenteich pond.
In Wildemann, it's time to slam on the brakes again, as the 19-Lachter-Stollen visitor mine, the Maria-Magdalena mountain church and the next Innerste information board "...of ore and pain" are located directly on the route.
The route leads via Lautenthal to the Innerste dam. There you can find out all about the dam and follow the course of the Innerste towards Langelsheim from the dam.
A very natural part of the tour now begins, which will delight you. You cycle directly along the course of the river on paths, some of which are earthen, to Sandfeldsee near Bredelem. In between, you will find more Innerste information boards.
On arrival in Ringelheim, there is a short loop to the castle with its park, dovecote tower and the monastery church of St. Abdon and Sennen. To the right and left of the river, the route leads past several information boards via Baddeckenstedt to Rhene. There you will find an observation station where you should stop for a short while.
Shortly afterwards, you reach the finish of the second stage in Grasdorf.
Day 3 / Grasdorf - Sarstedt / 57 km / 260 vertical meters
Rested and certainly still with the positive impressions of the previous day in your head, the third stage of the day begins. After just 4 km, you will see Derneburg Castle shining in the morning sun. The view over the ponds up to the castle is magical and a highlight of the day.
As you continue along the course of the river, your attention is drawn to Bad Salzdetfurth just before Klein Düngen. This should be invitation enough to take the approx. 10 km detour to the well-known spa town.On arrival in the town center, the first path leads you to the newly designed market square and St. George's Church. You then walk along the Lamme river to the Kurmittelhaus and the spa park with its graduation tower. In the immediate vicinity you will find the mining and salt museum in the salt works. (Please note: cycling is not permitted in the spa gardens!Bike back to Klein Düngen on the route you already know and then continue downstream through an area where you can see the "changing ages of the earth" to Marienberg.
The Domäne Marienberg cultural campus located here will captivate you. There should still be enough time, which is why a visit is a must.
The fact that the cycle path is becoming more popular is partly due to the fact that Hildesheim is getting closer and closer and so are the next UNESCO World Heritage Sites. St. Mary's Assumption Cathedral and St. Michael's Church have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985 as the most important pre-Romanesque buildings.
The "circular route" through Hildesheim included in the tour also takes you to the other churches and the historic market square on the famous "Hildesheim Rose Route".Back on the actual route along the Innerste river, the next detour follows shortly before Giesen, because the Giesen ponds are natural gems that are second to none. If you want to set yourself a little challenge, you can visit the burial mound in Giesen Forest instead of returning the same way.
A little later, when the Malzfeldt mill comes into view, you have reached the outskirts of Sarstedt. Cycle through the town and after another 4 km you will reach the end of the tour, the mouth of the river Innerstemündung into the Leine.
You are sure to enjoy this magnificent sight for a while before returning to Sarstedt station.
