You will experience a great trip into the species-rich animal and plant world of the Dummeniederung on the Dummewiesen Path with its streams, deciduous forests, and brightly blooming wetlands.

Between the market town Bergen (Dumme) and the village Jiggel, the Dumme winds its many bends towards the north. For nature lovers, the family-friendly Dummewiesen circular route is a real treat: it leads through a vibrant cultural landscape with numerous bodies of water, where small viewing platforms invite you to linger. In summer, hundreds of banded darters flutter through the air here, and via an audio station, you can even listen to some frog calls. And perhaps you will spot the kingfisher! On the route lies the Rundling village Jiggel, whose water mill is located above a ford still usable today. The village Bergen an der Dumme, which you pass and cross on your hike, is also historically interesting. At the old border and customs checkpoint, an information board explains the border situation at that time, and from the lookout tower, you have a wonderful view of the Drawehn ridge, an ice age end moraine landscape.

Directions

The hike starts at the info house in Bergen and initially follows the Dumme to a bridge which you cross, then follow the course of the road. The path runs along the village before leaving it on this side, returning to Bergen an der Dumme after a detour through the fields on the other side. You pass through the village over small streets and follow a field path into the nature reserve “Obere Dummeniederung”. Along the way, information boards provide details about this special habitat. Natural forests, extensive wetlands, and extensively used meadows characterize this landscape. From the viewing platform at the edge of the shallow waters, you can observe birds searching for food. At the end of the path lies the Rundling village Jiggel with its historic water mill. After crossing the Schnegaer Mühlenbach, the path takes you through the nature reserve “Gain” and along the Dumme back to your starting point in Bergen.

Two shortcuts are set up on the route. They are marked with a white triangle on a red background. The route length is shortened by about half.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A magnificent sea of flowers flourishes on the wetlands every year. In spring, the white and yellow blossoms of cuckooflower and marsh marigold shine, while in summer pink hues dominate the scene.
