Not much remains, but the history is all the more exciting: this tour takes you to the sites of four medieval castles that were once of military, economic or political importance in the Elbmarsch region.
- It starts in Lüdersburg, where there was once an important lowland castle. It was probably built as a moated castle in the 13th century. The current location of Lüdersburg Castle largely corresponds to the historic castle site.
- The route continues to Echem. Here, too, there was a castle complex that strategically secured the crossings and ownership of the region. Its exact location is difficult to identify today, but historical sources confirm its existence - as part of Lüneburg's pledge castle policy.
- In Lüdershausen , there are few reminders of the former fortifications. However, the course of the old moat is still partially visible. This fortification was used specifically to secure the salt road - an important economic factor for the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg.
- Finally, the route leads to Artlenburg, probably the most important place on this tour. Ertheneburg Castle was located here and controlled the Elbe crossing and salt road for centuries. Today, a monument and an information board commemorate the mighty fortress.
