Wangerooge railway station
Holidaymakers have reached the destination of the combined ferry and island train journey to Wangerooge at the island station in the middle of the town. About 90 minutes earlier at the pier in Harlesiel: wind and waves, the smell of salt in the air and the island on the northern horizon. No noise, no hurry. The cars stay behind in Harlesiel on the mainland or stay at home altogether, and so does the hustle and bustle.
When the ferry leaves for Wangerooge, it takes its passengers at a different pace. The white Deutsche Bahn ships glide towards the island of Wangerooge at a leisurely 9 knots (17 km/h). Later, the island railroad "accelerates" to 20 km/h, but higher speeds - apart from the wind - are virtually unknown in the North Sea spa.
Ebbbe and tide characterize the rhythm of life on Wangerooge. The times when the easternmost of the East Frisian Islands can be reached by boat from the mainland are determined by the daily changing tides. The crossing takes 45 to 60 minutes and is only possible in a six-hour time window before and after high tide.
On arrival at the pier, holidaymakers are taken by island train to Wangerooge station, around 4 km away. The ride on the narrow-gauge railroad is unique, as it is the only one allowed to cross the salt marshes, which are located in protection zone one (quiet zone) of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.
Open daily one hour before each departure of the island railroad and half an hour before departure for departures before 08.00.
