Grafenschloss zu Hoya
As the seat of the Lower County, it played a significant role in the Middle Ages between the bishoprics of Bremen and Minden. Often besieged and destroyed, but repeatedly rebuilt, the main parts of the three-winged complex date from the 19th century. Only the east and west wings are medieval at their core. Of the many castles and palaces that the Counts of Hoya built in the area that would later become the district of Nienburg, only the one in Hoya itself remains. However, the structure—located directly on the Weser River—acquired its current appearance largely in the 18th and 19th centuries, long after the old count’s family had died out.
The complex has been restored, modernized, and repurposed. Today it houses the tourist information office, a wedding chapel, an exhibition on the history of the counts and the castle, and offices.
