The ancestral castle of the Counts of Hoya was built as a moated castle on the western side of the Weser around 1213.
As the residence of the Lower County, it played an important role between the bishoprics of Bremen and Minden in the Middle Ages. Often besieged and destroyed, but always rebuilt, the main parts of the three-winged complex date from the 19th century. Only the east and west wings are medieval in essence. Of the many castles and palaces built by the Counts of Hoya in the area that later became the district of Nienburg, only the one in Hoya itself remains. However, the castle, which is located directly on the Weser, was largely given its current appearance in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the old count family had long since died out.

The ensemble was restored, modernized and put to a new use. Today it is home to the tourist information office, a wedding room, an exhibition on the history of the counts and the castle and offices.
