From village school to information centre: the old school in Neu-Wendischthun
The "Old School" in Neu-Wendischthun, a small district of Bleckede, is located on the right bank of the Elbe. Neu-Wendischthun is located directly on the Elbe cycle path and close to the ferry "Neu Bleckede - Bleckede".
The building, built in 1824 as a village school, has belonged to the town of Bleckede since 1993. Since then, it has served as guest accommodation  and an information centre.
In the dining and recreation room of the old school building, a small panel exhibition commissioned by the town shows the history of Bleckede.
It sheds light on flood protection, rural life and, above all, the inner-German border, which ran just a few metres away. The focus is on the life of the people in Bleckede on and with the border. Photographs, documents, newspaper articles and an audio station with eyewitness accounts complement the written information.
A border fence element at the entrance to the hostel grounds indicates the exhibition.
