The Botanical Garden is a green oasis of peace in the middle of the city of Oldenburg. Founded in 1882 as a seminar garden for teacher training, today it is a scientific facility of the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences at Carl von Ossietzky University. Teaching and research in the Botanic Garden is intended to promote knowledge about plants and their interaction with the environment and humans. One project with local relevance is the Oldenburg Kale Breeding. "Brassica oleracea cv. Oldenburgia" is intended to combine as many positive characteristics of the currently known species as possible and to have a culinary appeal far beyond the kale tour capital.
Species-rich flora and fauna
Over 7,000 native and exotic plant species can be found on 3.5 hectares. The Medicinal Garden, Tropical House and Alpinum border on the flora of northwest Germany and the Mediterranean. In addition, there are woody plants from North America, Asia and Europe. The Botanic Garden is also home to a number of animals, including owls, storks, snakes and turtles.Learn and linger
The large green area is open to the public and invites visitors to take educational walks through nature. Lectures, seminars and themed tours are also held here throughout the year. With the "Green School", an extracurricular place of learning for children and young people was also created in 2009.Good to know
