Historical charm day and night

A half-timbered extravaganza

Half-timbered buildings greet you at every turn in Celle. You can never get enough of the captivating historical architecture. After all, Celle is home to one of the most densely built and complete half-timbered ensembles of its kind anywhere in the world. From the Old Town Hall with its Weser Renaissance gable to the Hoppener House, strolling the streets is pure delight. Along the way, you’ll pass small, often family-run shops, cosy pubs and local department stores. Whether enjoying an evening glass of wine at a restaurant or strolling through the festive winter Christmas market, the enchantment of the historic Old Town is ever-present.

Art, architecture and light installations

Romantic castles and Bauhaus design

No visit to Celle is complete without a stop at the castle. This fairytale Baroque residence was once home to English royalty – no less than three Dukes of Celle also ruled England! Today, it still exudes regal splendour. At the Residence Museum, experience the castle’s history and its inhabitants through modern, interactive displays.

Celle also surprises visitors with its modern flair: alongside Weimar and Dessau, the town is one of Germany’s most significant Bauhaus landmarks. The architect Otto Haesler shaped Celle’s urban landscape with his buildings and housing estates – a guided architectural tour in his footsteps is highly recommended. Afterwards, a visit to the 24-Hour Art Museum is highly recommended. The museum is transformed twice a day: by day, it functions as an art gallery, and by night, it dazzles with mesmerising light installations.
