Zugvogeltage: So weit die Flügel tragen…
The knot is one of the true cosmopolitans among the migratory birds of the Wadden Sea. Hardly any other bird species flies over such large parts of the world during migration. The knots here in the Wadden Sea were only recently in Siberia or Greenland, and they are already on their way to their wintering grounds in Western Europe and Africa. A journey, a life, could hardly be more challenging. How do they defy ice and snow and raise their young in the far north, how do they cope with heat and drought in their winter quarters and what role does the Wadden Sea play in this? Peter Südbeck, head of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, provides insights into the fascinating life of the knot. He "follows" it on its journey across continents and describes the dangers that the knot is increasingly confronted with.
