Wilhelmshavener Labskaus-Fest

The Wilhelmshaven Labskaus is back—and with it, a beloved tradition of the port city. After a hiatus last year, Wilhelmshaven’s restaurant owners, together with the German Red Cross (DRK), are inviting everyone to the Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., to the big Labskaus Festival on Bahnhofstraße (Rambla). Together, they’re putting this traditional seafaring dish in the spotlight and showcasing how closely culinary history, hospitality, and a sense of community are intertwined in Wilhelmshaven.

Hardly any other dish is as closely linked to the history of seafaring as Labskaus. What was once considered a nutritious meal for sailors on long voyages has long since evolved into a cult dish of northern Germany and is now an integral part of the port city’s identity. The mixture of salted beef, potatoes, and beets—traditionally served with a fried egg, rollmops, and pickled gherkins—represents coastal cuisine like no other dish.

Wilhelmshaven has already given Labskaus a special spotlight on multiple occasions. The city gained nationwide fame for setting the world record with what was then the world’s largest Labskaus. To this day, the Wilhelmshaven Labskaus stands for maritime history, a sense of local pride, and a piece of the city’s living culture.

This year’s event thrives on a sense of community. Together, Wilhelmshaven’s restaurateurs and the German Red Cross are putting the Wilhelmshaven Labskaus in the spotlight. Visitors can enjoy this traditional dish as a small tasting portion or as a full meal. A spacious seating area invites guests to eat together, strike up conversations, and experience the special atmosphere.

“With the Labskaus Festival, we want not only to celebrate a traditional dish but also to bring our city’s maritime identity to life. At the same time, we want to show what’s possible when the restaurant industry, volunteers, and the city all pull together,” say the organizers.

On this day, Bahnhofstraße transforms into a true Labskaus Zone. In addition to the culinary offerings, guests can look forward to a varied program of events for the whole family. Folk dance groups, walking acts, and other activities provide entertainment and invite visitors to linger.
