Wattwanderung nach Baltrum

... on foot
Mudflat walk
Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park
Nature experience
Accompanied by the mudflat guides from the National Park Center, the hike takes us right across the mudflats to the island. You’re free to explore Baltrum until the ferry takes us back to the mainland—passing by the seal rookeries along the way.

We’ll meet at the Neßmersiel harbor and then walk together through the salt marshes and out onto the mudflats. There, we’ll cover a total distance of about 6.5 km, stopping frequently to soak up the special atmosphere and observe, listen, and experience our surroundings. You’ll be amazed at all there is to discover in the mudflats. We’ll cross tidal creeks several times—a wet but fun experience—though the water rarely reaches above the knees. The final part of the route leads through the easily navigable sandy mudflats off Baltrum, and soon we’ll be on the island, where we’ll walk through the salt marshes again and arrive back at the harbor. There, you’ll have the opportunity to wash your feet, change your shoes and wet clothes, and use the restroom facilities. Then you’ll be ready to explore the island on your own.

The mudflat tour lasts about 3–3.5 hours in total. Once you arrive on the island, you’ll have free time. Baltrum is a wonderful place to spend the day, whether in town, on the beach, in the dune landscape, or even with a visit to the National Park Center.

There are usually several ferry departures back to the mainland, and you’re free to choose whichever one suits you best. The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes and passes by the seal rookeries. A perfect way to cap off this day of nature exploration. Current ferry schedules are available at www.baltrum-linie.de.
