Sonderausstellung: „Des Seemanns Grab ist (nicht) die See!

The maritime history of the Fehne is particularly evident in the graves of its inhabitants. Numerous gravestones refer to professions such as sailor, captain, or shipbuilder; they are dotted with symbols of Christian seafaring or even proudly depict the deceased’s ship, lying at anchor, its sails furled, in the eternal harbor. They thus reflect a time when life in the Fehne was profoundly shaped by seafaring.
But whether of artistic value or historical significance—each of these stones also tells a story (of a life). After all, economic prosperity and harsh blows of fate were often closely intertwined—even in the cemeteries. Whether in their native soil or on foreign shores, the exhibition is dedicated to the historical gravesites of the Fehntje seafarers and presents the stories “behind” the headstones.
