"So close to heaven" - the medieval cloister in Walkenried Monastery

Guided historical tour
The Gothic cloister of Walkenried Monastery was the center of monastic life and is particularly famous for its double-aisled cloister as part of the Upper Harz Water Management UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cloister formed the heart of a medieval monastery complex: as a covered walkway architecture, it connected the most important rooms of the cloister, fulfilled both sacred and practical functions and was, in a sense, the "main street" of the convent. This is where the strictly regulated everyday life of the monks took place.
The Walkenried cloister - a masterpiece of Gothic architecture - is considered one of the most beautiful cloisters in northern Germany. Its northern wing, the so-called reading aisle, is a special feature: it has two aisles, making it Walkenried's landmark. This special design was one of the criteria for being awarded the World Heritage title.
Join us on a journey through the history of the monastery and discover the uniqueness of the Walkenried cloister and the beauty of Cistercian architecture.
