MEINUNGSFREIHEIT Lesung und Gespräch mit Ronen Steinke
Public debate has recently become significantly more heated, not least due to social media and its algorithms.
At the same time, freedom of speech has been noticeably restricted in recent years by new laws and regulations, including online. Statements that were still permissible in 2015 may be punishable by law today. So what’s the truth behind the claim that “you can’t say anything anymore”? Who should and must tolerate what, and when is the limit reached regarding what public figures, in particular, must put up with—even when it comes to derogatory criticism?
Ronen Steinke, a lawyer with a Ph.D., author, and journalist, explores these questions in his latest
book, *Freedom of Speech*, published in 2026 by Piper Verlag. The author will read from the book at the Kulturdiele and engage in a discussion with the audience afterward.
Steinke, born in Erlangen in 1983, studied law and criminology and has worked at law firms,
a juvenile detention center, and at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. He is currently a senior editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Admission is free.
