The novel is both a love story and a tale of marriage, as well as a social commentary and portrait of society in Latin America at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The work was published in 1985.
Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was a Colombian writer. The publication of his novel *One Hundred Years of Solitude* (1967) brought him worldwide fame and made him the most widely read Latin American author. In 1982, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
