Landesbühne: Der zerbrochne Krug

Straight theatre
In the Dutch village of Huisum, Marthe Rull's jug has been broken during a night-time burglary. Village magistrate Adam is supposed to find the culprit, but arrives in court extremely tired and overworked. To make matters worse, a court councillor has arrived to assess the village magistrate's performance. During the trial, it transpires that Martha's daughter Eve had a late visit, who must have broken the jug in her attempt to escape. The wilder the suspicions surrounding the dishonorable visit
become, the quicker Judge Adam seems to want to reach a verdict and find someone responsible - even though there is some evidence to suggest that the judge himself could be involved in the crime...

Heinrich von Kleist's (1777-1811) timeless comedy mercilessly and entertainingly shows how those in power try to evade their responsibility with the utmost audacity. As a satirical critique of the justice system and human weaknesses, Kleist takes aim at the transgressions of both the powerful and ordinary people with sharp wit and oppressive insight.
