Landesbühne: Alles muss glänzen

Straight theatre
drama
Outside, the world is drowning in water, but in Rebecca's house everything continues as normal. While familiar melodies on the radio make us forget the roar of the impending deluge, the housewife stands in the kitchen in high heels and prepares a festive family meal with a swinging spatula - although the family has long since broken up: the father has left to find a better place; the son has also left to find his father; only daughter Rachel, about to fledge, keeps her mother company. But regardless of whether the neighbor shoots herself because of the hopeless situation or Rachel's prom partner is unceremoniously mauled by a shark, the protective home must continue to be cherished and cared for by Rebecca, because "everything
must shine" - even if the world is ending.

Noah Haidle (*1978 in Michigan) has written a bitingly tragic comedy about the human way of dealing with doom in entertaining dialogue. In his abstruse and absurd end-time scenario, in which biblical plagues meet climate catastrophes and human abysses, Haidle shows the (in)ability of humans in the face of impending catastrophe. Whether unrealistic hope, ice-cold repression or disillusioned acceptance: every coping strategy is permitted to deal with the end of the world - at least as long as it only happens on our doorstep.
