Paula's Inspiration

Marking the 150th Anniversary of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s Birth

February 7 through November 1, 2026

In 2025, Paula Modersohn-Becker and her fellow artists will take center stage in the exhibition programs of the four museums in Worpswede. This tribute to Worpswede’s most significant artistic figure, marking the 150th anniversary of her birth, will continue in 2026 with another joint exhibition. It is thus part of the multi-year project “ZEITENWENDE. Art on the Move in a World of Upheaval‹ (2022–2027), which uses the anniversaries of key artistic figures as an opportunity to connect artistic traditions and groundbreaking historical innovations with contemporary artistic movements and social issues.

Taking one work by Paula Modersohn-Becker from each of the four museums as their starting point, the curators of the four museums embark on artistic journeys of discovery under the title “Impuls Paula.” Following various thematic strands, they present works of art that can be viewed and understood in the context of the impulses Paula Modersohn-Becker set in motion through her life and work, and that hold significance for the current art scene and its social reception.

Barkenhoff

I am / you are. Portraits of People

At the Barkenhoff, a dialogue unfolds between portraits spanning more than a century—from expressive self-reflections to documentary photography and contemporary approaches. Portraits are far more than mere depictions of people: they function as cultural ciphers, mirrors of social norms, and expressions of both personal and collective ideas.
