East Frisia is characterized by wide open spaces, the sea, fields, and, above all, cows.
But what is life really like for a dairy cow on a modern farm? How do modern agriculture, environmental protection, and climate protection go hand in hand?
We invite you to visit the Smit family’s farm in Dykhusen/Visquard, home to 270 cows. Focko Smit will guide you through the farm and explain the work processes, feeding, and the technology used. You’ll learn why the cows are equipped with sensors, what a total mixed ration is, and the importance of rumination time and cow comfort. You’ll see how the cows are milked in a swing-over milking parlor and how electricity is produced from the manure in an on-farm biogas plant.
The Smit family has already been awarded the “Milchlandpreis” (Dairy Farm Award) by the State Dairy Association twice for their sustainable dairy farming practices. Dive into the exciting world of agriculture and experience how food is produced!
Duration: approx. 2 hours. Meeting point: at 2:00 p.m. at the Dykhusen/Visquard farm, Dykhuser Straße 9, 26736 Krummhörn-Visquard. Start: at the biogas plant (two white roofs). Participants must make their own way there.
Note: Participation in the tour is only possible with a valid ticket. Minimum number of participants: 6 / maximum 15 people. We therefore recommend that you purchase your tickets in advance from our ticket shop or in person at the Greetsiel Tourist Information Office, Zur Hauener Hooge 15. Ticket reservations are not possible.
