The story is set against the backdrop of metropolitan life in Mexico City in the early 20th century. Frida, a beautiful and spirited young woman, suffers a tragic car accident that confines her to bed for a long time. But she does not give up; instead, with iron will, she begins to paint from her bed. She channels her dreams, longings, and especially her pain into passionate, unflinching oil paintings, whose sincere intensity wins her the attention and love of her future long-term partner and husband, Diego Rivera. A wildly romantic love story unfolds, in which flirtations and infidelities on both sides play a major role. Frida also flirts with such illustrious figures as Leon Trotsky.
When Frida catches Diego having sex with her sister, she breaks up with him. Later, they divorce, followed shortly thereafter by a remarriage under dramatic circumstances: After the toes of one of her feet had to be amputated due to gangrene, Diego proposes to her again, and she accepts. This time, the marriage lasts until Frida’s untimely death.
