Die Landesbühne Nord präsentiert "Spatz und Engel"
The Story of the Friendship Between Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich
Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf—two global stars who could hardly be more different: One was raised at a boarding school as the daughter of an imperial police lieutenant; the other was the child of a circus acrobat and a street singer, who grew up in a brothel in Normandy. While Dietrich celebrated her early successes in German silent films with her elegant demeanor, Piaf was already captivating audiences at a young age with the emotional power of her voice. In 1948, the “Sparrow of Paris” and the “Blue Angel” met before a concert performance in New York: the beginning of a close friendship that weathered many ups and downs and lasted until Piaf’s untimely death in 1963…
Daniel Große Boymann (*1976) and Thomas Kahry (*1979) have created SPATZ UND ENGEL, a moving play about two female artists who are magically drawn to one another despite their divergent personalities. The unforgettable chansons—including “La vie en rose,” “Don’t Ask Why I’m Leaving,” “Milord,” “Tell Me Where the Flowers Are,” and “Non, je ne regrette rien”—are of extraordinary emotional power.
