At the Palace of Versailles, Marie Antoinette and her husband, King Louis XVI, are awaiting their execution—though they have been doing so for 15 years now. While the Revolution rages in Paris, the royal couple has no choice but to be patient. The new government is far too preoccupied with itself and with denouncing its own members. The fate of the former monarchs now lies in the hands of a sluggish bureaucracy. 

Unannounced guests are constantly barging into the palace, all wanting to have their say. And what does the young Napoleon have to do with all this? Fed up with his fate, Ludwig would love to pull the lever on the guillotine himself, but his homemade guillotine—due to a few design flaws—results in some unexpected corpses.
