Der Held vom Bahnhof Friedrichstraße

The Hero of Friedrichstraße Station

Germany 2022 | 113 min. | Director: Wolfgang Becker

Michael Hartung (Charly Hübner), owner of a hopelessly over-indebted Berlin video store, leads a rather unspectacular life. Until a journalist suddenly turns him into a hero of German history: Allegedly, more than 30 years ago, Hartung—then an employee of the Reichsbahn—organized the largest mass escape from the GDR.

Tempted by a fee, Hartung confirms the story—even though only a few fragments of it are true. Before long, the charming yet melancholic impostor finds himself, against his will, caught in a web of half-truths and lies. And then he meets Paula (Christiane Paul).

An entertaining yet moving comedy about memory, truth, love, and the question of how history is made.

The final film by director Wolfgang Becker (“Good Bye, Lenin!”), who passed away in 2024.

The event is organized by the film initiative “Lichtblick in Otterndorf” and presented with the kind support of the Cultural Office of the City of Otterndorf.
