  • Running
  • ... by boat
  • from €70.00 p.P.
On the historic fortress island of Wilhelmstein in the Steinhuder Meer, 120 laps of pure thrills await you in a very small space. Whether it’s a marathon, half-marathon, or kids’ race—conquer the fortress walls and become part of a unique running adventure with chivalrous charm and a cannonball as the winner’s trophy!

Are you ready for a marathon experience like no other?
Forget wide streets and open landscapes—at the Wilhelmstein Island Marathon on Steinhuder Meer, you’ll run in a very confined space, surrounded by thick fortress walls, old cannons, and the waters of Steinhuder Meer. It’s no wonder this event is considered one of the craziest marathons in the world! Take on the challenge and conquer the 18th-century island fortress at a running pace.

The races at a glance:

  • Marathon (42.195 km)
  • Half Marathon (21.1 km)
  • Kids’ Races: Klabauter Run & Pirate Run

The Course: 120 laps to the finish line

The entire island is just 1.25 hectares in size. One lap measures exactly 351.9 meters—which means for the marathon distance: 120 laps around the fortress!
What sounds flat and leisurely is actually a real physical and mental challenge. Narrow paths—some only one meter wide—and many sharp turns around the four bastions demand full concentration. Overtaking takes practice! Those who master the mental challenge of the monotony will be carried along by a unique, historic setting and the support of the crowd.

The focus is on having fun

In this race, chasing personal bests takes a back seat. It’s all about the experience, endurance, and determination! The atmosphere is friendly and motivating. Tip: Creativity is definitely encouraged! Anyone who wants to is welcome to line up at the start in costume (e.g., as a knight, damsel, or pirate). The central refreshment tent will provide you with fresh energy and encouragement every lap.

Prizes you’ll only find here

You won’t find ordinary trophies at the Island Marathon. The fastest female and male runners will be awarded—as befits the occasion—a real cannonball! But here, everyone is a winner: All finishers will receive a well-deserved medal and a certificate at the finish line as a memento of this crazy adventure.

Important organizational information
