Brunswick

Between history, nature and a devil’s carnival

Brunswick – The Lion City. How did the city earn its nickname, and what does it have to do with your visit? The answer is simple: Brunswick is the city of the Guelph Duke Henry the Lion. For centuries, Hanseatic merchants and the Guelphs have shaped its character. Even today, their influence is evident in the city’s cultural and historical identity, which you’ll experience through its magnificent buildings and ornately decorated stone structures. Wander through its winding streets lined with wonderful half-timbered houses. Relax in the parklands along the Oker River, just a short distance from the city centre. And here’s something you might not know: Brunswick is northern Germany’s carnival capital. During the traditional carnival parade known as the Schoduvel (literally ‘Scare-Devil’ in the North German dialect), the people of this city in Niedersachsen don a new costume each February.
