Through protected landscape areas and picturesque villages in the Wiesteniederung herb region

The herb route leads along well-developed cycle paths and agricultural roads as well as district and country roads through an attractive cultural landscape - the Wiesteniederung herb region. The landscape is characterized by diverse biotopes with wet meadows, swamp forests, moors and the Wieste river on one side and agricultural fallow and arable land on the other.

In the middle of it all are idyllic villages with relics from times gone by. The watermill in Stuckenborstel, the Bible and labyrinth garden in Horstedt, the motorized mill and the former home of the late writer Walter Kempowski "Haus Kreienhoop" in Nartum, the local history houses in Hesedorf and Sottrum or the fieldstone churches in Gyhum and Sottrum invite you to make a stopover.

During the cycle tour, you should not miss out on the herbal specialties in the inns and restaurants along the route. In addition to the numerous herbs along the way, various facilities, such as the Rühlemann herb nursery in Horstedt, the Nartumer Kräuterrunde, the Glinddamm herbal nature trail near Mulmshorn, Eschels Hoff in Benkel and the lavender field in Stapel, offer products and information on the subject of "herbs".

Directions

The 50 km circular tour starts in Sottrum, where the herb route takes you past Heimathaus and the open cycle route church of St. Georg. You cycle via Clüversborstel, Schleeßel and Bötersen to Mulmshorn and have the opportunity to stop off at the "Heidejäger" herb hotel with its beautiful herb garden.

From Mulmshorn, the herb route continues to Hesedorf. The park-like Hesedorf grounds are home to historic half-timbered buildings and a herb spiral. A place that invites you to linger and rest before continuing on to the 1000-year-old Romanesque fieldstone church of St. Margarethen in Gyhum.

From Wehldorf, the herb route runs parallel to the Hamburg-Bremen long-distance cycle route for a while. In the 750-soul village of Nartum, the former motor mill and the Haus Kreienhoop, the home and workplace of the writer Walter Kempowski, who died in 2007, invite you to make a stopover. If you have time, don't miss the Nartum Harbour, the only harbour without water access.

From Nartum, cycle to Horstedt, where you can visit the Bible Garden with the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Rühlemann's Kräuter & Duftpflanzen nursery. In Stapel is the Stapel lavender and herb field, where, in addition to over 3,000 real lavender plants, almost 100 types and varieties of herbs are grown for viewing, testing and harvesting. A cozy, rustic seating area invites you to take a break, while e-bikes can be charged free of charge and the internet can be tapped via D-Lan (power cable required).

The next stop is the Eschels Hoff in Benkel, an unusually designed garden with over 350 different herbs. You cycle via Taaken and Reeßum to the final highlight of the circular tour. The water mill in Stuckenborstel, which is idyllically situated on a mill pond and is fed by the Wieste river. From there, it is not far to the starting point Sottrum.

The route leads through the following places:

Sottrum - Clüversborstel -  Bötersen - Mulmshorn - Hesedorf - Gyhum - Wehldorf - Nartum - Horstedt - Stapel - Taaken - Reeßum - Stuckenborstel - Sottru

Additional information

The district of Rotenburg (Wümme) has an approx. 1,800 km long network of signposted cycle paths. Star cyclists can set off on several routes from one location. There are also eight long-distance cycle routes available for tours lasting several days.

If you find any discrepancies or errors in the signposting or in the designation of the routes, please let us know. We are working on the issue! A district-wide quality review of the cycle path network and cycle routes is currently underway. The results will help us to identify and rectify any weak points (e.g. missing signposting, twisted signs, impassable sections).

Do you use the KOMOOT app for route planning and on the road? Then you will be pleased to know that all of our cycle tours can be found on the KOMOOT online portal. You can also download the GPX track for the tour here (see green box on the right, below the map) and save it directly to your computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. For further planning and routing on site, there are various free apps and programs that can be used to display the downloaded GPX tracks (e.g. on a smartphone).
