Krabat stirbt

Puppet show

The mill is the beginning and the end. The black mill in the forest. The swamp forest. The twilight forest. The dead forest.

From here, Krabat tries to flee and yet must realize that he cannot escape the grinding gears of time.

In his search for truth in a fragmenting world, Krabat is an eternal wanderer who can never find peace.

KRABAT STIRBT is a trilingual play in Upper Sorbian, Lower Sorbian and German that uses strong imagery and a mixture of languages to bring the story of Krabat closer to an audience outside the Sorbian settlement area.

Based on Sorbian folk tunes and legends from Lusatia, a German-Sorbian music theater piece is being created that uses stick puppets, hurdy-gurdy and live electronics to place the figure of Krabat in a contemporary context.

The sound center of KRABAT STIRBT is a hurdy-gurdy, an instrument that embodies the change of social movements with its history. Johannes Kürschner will create contemporary compositions for the hurdy-gurdy, in which the historical instrument is combined with electro-acoustic playbacks, which form the basis for making Krabat's legendary journey through the ages a moving complete work consisting of text/narrative, play, puppet and music.
