Der zerbrochne Krug

Straight theatre
Comedy by Heinrich von Kleist | From 15 years old | A-level subject 2026
We are in court, but the truth is not the issue here.

On the day of the trial, village judge Adam appears quite damaged. The wounds on his face suggest a turbulent night. The first case to be heard that day seems trivial at first: Marthe Rull complains about a broken jug. The jug was in her daughter Eve's room and was destroyed by an impetuous intruder. Eve's fiancé Ruprecht is under suspicion. Or was it his rival Lebrecht? Or the devil himself? Eve is the only one who knows the truth, but she remains silent.

Kleist's comedy was first performed in 1808 under the direction of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and is one of his best-known works. For all its laughs, "The Broken Jug" also deals with controversial, topical issues such as corruption, abuse of power and a society that supports this.

Truth has never been covered up more grandiosely on stage, full of absurd argumentation capers, hilariously funny, linguistically virtuoso - and humanly abysmal.
