Directions

The tour begins at the **St. Liborius Church in Bremervörde** and first takes you through a gently rolling Geest landscape with vast areas of farmland. Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages such as **Oerel, Barchel, and Oese** with their idyllic churches and beautifully landscaped village squares.

After Oese, you’ll first ride along the **Franzhorn forest edge** and eventually reach the **Oste-Hamme Canal**. This structure was built as part of the drainage and settlement of the Teufelsmoor. Via this canal, the former moor farmers shipped the excavated and dried black peat to Bremen, where it was well-suited as fuel peat. From this point on, the character of the towns and the landscape changes. The Geest villages give way to so-called Findorff settlements—kilometer-long moor-row villages lining roads and canals.
Explore the **typical moor-edge settlement of Augustendorf** with the **Historic Moor Farm** and discover the **Huvenhoopsmoor on the Moor Adventure Trail**, which leads directly to a **viewing platform** from which you have a sweeping view of Lake Huvenhoop. In the spring and fall, thousands of cranes and other migratory birds stop here to rest. A beautiful spot that’s well worth a long break.

The next section of the route gradually leads out of the moor into the **Ostetal** and follows the small, natural river all the way to Bremervörde. Right between these two natural areas lies the **Sandbostel Camp Memorial** . From 1939 to 1945, approximately 300,000 prisoners of war and internees were held at the Stalag XB prisoner-of-war camp. By the end of the war, 9,500 concentration camp prisoners had been added to their ranks. Today, visitors can explore an exhibition and 23 buildings. Passing through **Sandbostel and Minstedt**, past the **Drinking Water Nature Trail** and **Tempelberg**, through the small **Vorwerk Wood** , you’ll eventually return to Bremervörde, where cultural highlights include the **Bachmann Museum**, the nature and adventure park at Lake Vörder, which invites you to linger, and the downtown area with its restaurants and cafés, perfect for a break.

The route passes through the following towns:
Bremervörde – Glinde – Oerel – Barchel – Oese – Osterwede – Brillit – Friedrichsdorf – Augustendorf – Heinrichsdorf – Sandbostel – Minstedt – Bremervörde

Additional information

The district of Rotenburg (Wümme) has an **approx. 1,800 km long network of signposted cycle paths**. Star cyclists can set off on several routes from one location. There are also eight long-distance cycle routes available for tours lasting several days.

If you find any discrepancies or errors in the signposting or in the designation of the routes, please let us know. We are working on the issue! The results will help us to identify and rectify any weak points (e.g. missing signposting, twisted signs, impassable sections).
