Stammtisch: Talk & Tummelplatz

How Close Is the Middle East to Us?
-----------------------------------

How can we understand current politics, society, and culture in the Near and Middle East?
Theater is a place of encounter! Let’s make these encounters happen; let’s start a conversation.
Dr. Abdolah Hoveyes is a historian and political scientist specializing in the Near and Middle East at the Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies at Ruhr University Bochum. He was born in 1956 in Ahvaz, in western Iran, as a member of the Arab minority. Dr. Abdolah Hoveyes will speak about the connections between Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, Israel, Gaza, Shiites, and Sunnis—both historically and in the present day. He’ll scratch the surface of these topics, as delving into them in depth would take days. How can we understand the current situation?
Dr. Jörn Thielmann will moderate this evening’s discussion with ease, covering current topics in the Near and Middle East. Jörn Thielmann is a scholar of Islam and the Middle East and the executive director of the FAU Research Center for Islam and Law in Europe (EZIRE) at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. www.ezire.fau.de
Sabine Trötschel works as a freelance theater director and festival organizer. Since 2011, she has gained extensive experience in the Arabic-speaking theater scene and continually strives to raise awareness of it in Germany. Her work now draws on a network spanning countries in North Africa, the Gulf States, and the Levant, all the way to Baghdad in Iraq. She will speak about her travels and the Arab Theater Festival in Hanover.
