Alena Schröder: “My Whole Life, oil on canvas, untitled”:
What if your life were a canvas? And the layers of paint were pain and happiness? Güstrow, May 1945: Fourteen-year-old Marlen lies huddled in the drawer of a dresser in an abandoned forester’s lodge. When she finally frees herself, she discovers an unassuming portrait of a young woman there. Wilma, who helped Marlen hide from the Russian soldiers just in time, takes the young orphan in. But Wilma has a secret that threatens to destroy her. Spanning two time periods, Alena Schröder tells the moving story of two women whose lives are mysteriously intertwined. Berlin, 2023: Hannah Borowski is 34 years old, and everything would be fine if it weren’t for her best friend Rubi suddenly moving out. And if only Hannah’s father hadn’t suddenly reappeared. And what became of the precious canvas that once belonged to Hannah’s grandmother, which has been a recurring theme throughout her life so far?
Emotional, warm-hearted, profound: In her novel, Alena Schröder explores the question of what we owe our parents and what legacy they pass on to us.

Anne Rabe: "The Possibility of Happiness"
Stine is born in the mid-1980s in a small town on the East German Baltic coast. She is a child of the fall of the Berlin Wall, too young to comprehend the systemic change in the GDR. Yet her family’s ideological influences continue to shape the younger generation. While her relatives hide the vanished world behind an impenetrable wall of silence, questions arise within Stine that can no longer be suppressed.
Anne Rabe has written a book that is as perceptive as it is stirring, with literary power. She explores the origins of racism and violence and examines the wounds of a generation that grew up between dictatorship and democracy.
We’ll be speaking with the authors about the relationships between the female characters and the creation of their books.
An event in cooperation with Radio Bremen.
