Helmut van Züren und Dörte Lehmann

Helmut van Züren will read from his novel "Altendeich" at the Ditzum Church

East Frisia about a hundred years ago! The small village of Altendeich, built on a mound, lies idyllically against the rugged backdrop of the North Sea. But appearances can be deceiving: behind the dike, life is as unforgiving as the stormy climate. The residents struggle with hardship, hard work—and an ominous series of mysterious misfortunes. Are these events mere coincidence or the result of ancient curses? At the center of the rumors is the mysterious Kattenfreterske, an eccentric outsider said to be in league with dark forces. But when she, too, falls victim to the mysterious incidents, Altendeich faces a catastrophe that surpasses anything the village community has ever experienced. A novel about life in the Frisian pile-dwelling villages, and at the same time a literary exploration of the North German coastal region in the early 20th century, with its ancient superstitions, dialect, and way of life. The book is an impressive journey into a forgotten microcosm.
About the Author: Helmut van Züren was born in East Frisia in 1954. He studied German language and literature and economics and worked for many years as a teacher. He is the editor and author of several textbooks. He lives with his family in East Frisia. Musical interludes (**Feel free to sing along if you’d like!)** by Dörte Lehmann, accordion.
