Thomas Bammer: Spargel in Afrika

a son in the shadow of his father
by Corinna Antelmann
with Thomas Bammer

With the intention of visiting his ninety-year-old father, a son does not find what he expected. It begins a journey through foreign lands, shared memories, good food and lived and not lived emotions and conflicts. Again and again, the conversation revolves around the enjoyment and preparation of meals and the question of who has to care for whom. "What are you missing, father?", He asks him and gives himself the answer: "Nothing, of course. You have everything you need "Where the ability to talk to each other is difficult, where speechlessness prevails, remembering the food is important. To asparagus, which was ordered from Germany to Africa, to Hühnerfrikassee for Christmas, to Eierschwammerl, which are served in the in-house restaurant. The need to eat becomes a metaphor for hunger that can not be satisfied with food. .... A tight solo recital about a son who tries to compensate for lack of affection and perhaps only gets caught up in the doom of repeating the failings of the generation before him.
