The historic Christmas market around St. Michael's Church is a true highlight of the pre-Christmas season in Lüneburg. The many contributors of the Lüneburg Old Town working group (ALA eV) make it possible for visitors to feel transported back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The city guards are waiting for you at the entrance to the Christmas market. All farmers, artisans and traders wear 15th and 16th century robes. It smells of sweet chestnuts and beeswax candles in the historic streets of the western part of the city. In the charcoal ovens bake bread, which are made after more than 500 years old recipes. Typical new-fangled Christmas goods search in vain - and that's a good thing. That's exactly what makes the market. The offer of the historical Christmas market is limited to goods that existed in such markets already in the 15th and 16th centuries.
