While Hamelin might not yet be a household name as a travel destination, there’s one association with the town that you’re almost certain to recognise: the Pied Piper. Nestled in the Weser Uplands, this legendary tale from Niedersachsen has even earned a place on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Follow in the footsteps of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and uncover the story of the town’s children who were spirited away – a mystery befitting its location on the German Fairy Tale Route. Surrounded by historical half-timbered houses, grand townhouses, the Weser river and rolling hills, exploring Hamelin becomes an even more delightful experience. And there are plenty of ways to explore: on foot, by bike or aboard a boat.

Given Hamelin’s international renown for its folklore, it is no surprise that many of its attractions are tied to the Pied Piper legend. A visit to the Pied Piper’s House offers everything you need to know about the story. If that’s not enough, be sure to catch the delightful figurines acting out the tale on the façade of the Hochzeitshaus. This building, a stunning example of Weser Renaissance architecture made of Suntel sandstone, is a standout feature of the town. Equally impressive is the city’s oldest church, the St Boniface Minster.

In summer, the town comes alive with large audiences flocking to the musical *Rats* and the Pied Piper open-air performances. These events offer a unique, humorous and emotional retelling of Hamelin’s history. Staying true to its mythical charm, Hamelin also hosts the Mystica Hamelon in spring – one of the most enchanting medieval and fantasy festivals in Niedersachsen. Beyond these spectacles, Hamelin provides plenty of variety with its vibrant city-centre events and boat trips along the Weser river, promising memorable experiences for all.
