Borkum

Borkum island is the most westerly of the seven East Frisian Islands, and at 36 square metres, it is also the largest. The effect of the Gulf Stream and the holiday island’s location on the North Sea coast result in a mild climate, low pollen counts and air containing high levels of iodine. In 2013, this German island was even named Europe’s first allergy-friendly island. As well as its healthy climate, Borkum also offers visitors a wide variety of cultural and wellness activities. Those in search of relaxation can spend time in Borkum’s famous beach tents on the 26-kilometre sandy beach or enjoy a stroll along the promenade. The bandstand, featuring daily musical entertainment, is a great attraction for all ages. No trip to the island of Borkum would be complete without a ride on Germany’s oldest island train, the “Dünenexpress” (Dune Express). This colourful train takes visitors on a scenic voyage of discovery from Borkum harbour to the town, taking in views of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site along the way.
