Mediterranean flair in the heart of the city

Warm days in Lüneburg take on an almost Mediterranean flair. With some 400 cafes, bars and restaurants, the salt and Hanse city has the second-highest concentration of pubs in Europe: everything from quaint pubs, traditional breweries and trendy bars to starred restaurants. All around, Lüneburg lives up to its reputation as the stronghold of gastronomy: be it on the Schröderstrasse boulevard or the waterfront terraces of the Stintmarkt (smelt market), enjoy international and regional dishes such as Heidschnuckenbraten (roast mutton from moorland sheep), Buchweizentorte (buckwheat cake) and smelt. This pub mile, together with the Old Crane and centuries-old houses towering above Ilmenau, is situated in the historic port district where salt was once loaded, and which transforms into a cosy beer garden on warm summer evenings.
