The heather blossom is the fifth season in the Lüneburger Heide. Every year between 8 August and 9 September, the heath is transformed into an ocean of mauve and violet flowers, a spectacle that attracts and enchants numerous visitors.
Heather blossom festivals
The heather blossom festivals are one of the highlights that take place when the heather is in bloom and they are one of the region’s key attractions. Every year in August, for more than 60 years, a heather queen is chosen to preside over the festival. The entertaining and varied programme with its many events and shows attracts thousands of visitors. Among the most popular heather festivals are those in Amelinghausen and Schneverdingen. For one weekend during the festival, these two ‘stately’ residences of the heather queens are transformed into royal strongholds of entertainment and culture. Magnificently decorated horse-drawn carriages, theatre performances, concerts and fireworks make the weekend a truly unforgettable experience. The high point of the celebration is the crowning the heather queen; on the last day of the festival, the new heather queen receives the crown from her predecessor.
