Germany’s northernmost low-lying mountain range lies at the intersection of Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen. It spans a total of 2,226 square kilometres and contains an impressive and diverse landscape that is shaped by deeply carved valleys, mountains with endless deciduous and coniferous forests, rugged rocks, gentle hills, bright mountain meadows and clear lakes. Numerous poets and painters were inspired by this unique landscape.
