Every year around Whitsun, the university town of Göttingen is all about the famous composer Georg Friedrich Händel and his contemporaries. Connoisseurs of baroque music have been gathering at the International Handel Festival (Internationale Händelfestspiele) since 1920.
The festival is crowned by the staging of the great Handel-operas. Nevertheless, the festival’s concept offers a wide variety: classical open-air concerts, serenades, chamber concerts, lectures and readings cater even to an audience less enthused by classical music. Concerts, oratorios, ballet performances, the series “Händel jazzt!” (Handel jazzes) and many more draw a bow form the baroque era to modern ages.
