The southern part of the Osnabruck region is characterized by the hills of the Teutoburger Forest and the Wiehen hills. The 187 kilometre long Osning route takes you on a tour of the region's castles, palaces, stately homes and spa towns. The abundance of healing springs has lent the area between Osnabruck and Bielefeld the name of "Germany's health spa region".
Emperors, kings and princes have left behind impressive buildings as demonstrations of their power and wealth. The architecture is rich and varied, ranging from the striking Iburg palace, the beautiful moated Schloss Schelenburg, to numerous Schlosses in Melle and Bad Essen. In Bad Essen, you can follow the trail of prehistoric creatures. Dinosaur footprints that are about 150 million years old have been exposed in an old quarry. Another interesting site is the observatory in Oldendorf. The route can be explored by bicycle or car.
