German Sluice Route

Length: approx. 200 kilometres

Just follow the North Sea coast and the Weser and Jade rivers! You can discover marsh and moor, lively towns, picturesque harbours, the North Sea coast and the neighbouring inland area along this 200 km circular bicycle route. It follows the historic sluices and dikes through interesting corners of the Weser marshlands.

The bicycle route is named after the sluices which are used to transport water from the ditches and rivers to open waters downstream. The sluices have been used to drain the flat marshlands for centuries. The natural gradient is so slight that the rainfall fails to drain off naturally. When water levels downstream are low, the sluices are opened, releasing the accumulated water and draining the land.
