Lüneburg - City of Salt

Picture: Old town The former salting and hanseatic city Lüneburg is for the first time mentioned in 956 in connection with the saltworks. It is located on the edge of the “Lüneburger Heath” between Hamburg and Hannover. Splendid gables show the former fortune of the city at times of the Hanseatic League and emboss whole street traits.

Especially impressive are the commercial centre "Am Sande" and the St. Johannes Church with its 108 meter brick tower. It is the oldest of the three maintained medieval churches of Lüneburg. Especially worth seeing is the city hall, one of the biggest maintained medieval city halls of Germany. As a city with a young university Lüneburg has approx. 69.000 inhabitants.

Salt, "white gold“, made Lüneburg into a rich and powerful city in the middle ages. Find out how it was found and extracted on the "Salted Day" and how important it is to Lüneburg even today. The saltworks, with an output of 20,000 tons of salt a year, supplied half of Europe.

The German Salt Museum

Picture: Salt is white, salt makes you thirsty, salt is odourless, salt is cheap, salt is an innocuous white grain. But this little grain plays a very important role in the North German salt capital, Luneburg. For more than 1000 years salt has determined the history of the city and made it powerful and wealthy. It was not until 1980 that the Luneburg Saline saltworks finally closed its gates.

Today, the former saltworks houses the German salt museum. The museum brings Luneburg's history and its significance as a salt town to life - a plethora of professions concerned themselves with the production of salt from the brine, of which the most powerful were the so-called "Sülfmeisters". They owned the rights to and the salt pans necessary for salt production and were appointed annually. With the "Sülfmeister“ days, the whole town commemorates the significance of "white gold".
