Lingen - Town of the
Lingen (Ems) with 56,000 inhabitants has many surprises. There's a variety of historical architecture in which you can feel the breath of the past or the idyllic countryside, just perfect for walking and cycling. Then there's the international theatre ambiance, a music scene from classical through to rock music and excellent sports facilities. You can enjoy Lingen (Ems) by bike, on foot, in a canoe or in a hot air balloon. The trip into the countryside will be an unforgettable experience.
You can experience an "historical spectacular“ with the "Kivelinge" - the bachelor sons of the bourgeoisie and emblem of the town. They take you on a tour of Lingen's history in historical costume creating a unique spectacle that you won't forget in a hurry.
The Historical City Hall
The historical city hall at the market place occupies a dominating position in the cities’ structure. It documents the urban self-confidence of past centuries. The city hall was built in 1555 and rebuild in 1663. Where today is an outside staircase initially was an open court. Shown in the gable is the cities’ coat of arms with its three towers. From the belfry rings a chime donated by the “Kivelingen“. The landmark offers an appropriate setting for marriage ceremonies and other official events.
A walk around the old town fortifications
Our town of Lingen (Ems) has many beautiful "nooks and crannies" worth discovering, and we would like to draw your attention to one very special attraction - a walk around the old town fortifications. The "Stadtgraben" - the now levelled ramparts of the former defensive works of Lingen, surrounded the city centre following their original lime until about the middle of the 20th Century, and were then partly built over following the 2nd World War. The now restored and signposted course of the former fortifications follows the original line, and will take you past many sites of historical interest.
The Lingen International Dressage Festival
The International Dressage Festival in Lingen has become an established event in the tournament calendar. The combination of the competitions is outstanding: the world elite of dressage sport comes here to compete at the highest level. The German Championships for physically-handicapped dressage riders is always part of the festival.
